Suspicious Behavior from Profilepeep

A while back, I was contacted by a Profilepeep user who asked me to help spread the word about suspicious behavior from the owner of Profilepeep. They claimed that after registering for Profilepeep and inserting the code into their profile, they received frequent visits to their profile from the owner of the site and were subscribed to profiles with no info. The user also suspected that the owner had gained access to their account through the cookies placed on their computer from the tracker.

When the user posted their concerns about the tracker program on the site's forum, the comments were promptly deleted and no explanation was offered. This same user now suspects that the owner of Profilepeep may be involved in another MySpace tracker site called whospy.net.

Read "When Spyware Performs as Advertised", a blog post on the Washington Post for more information on how these programs work and what they do to your computer once you install them.

Is it really worth it to have your browser freeze up and have everything you do online be tracked by God knows who JUST to be able to maybe see who is checking you on MySpace?

I'm no profilepeep fan, but this is bogus. There's no internet exploit that allows them to get your myspace account login via a cookie they place from their domain. They'd have to get YOUR myspace cookie, which can't be done on a site outside the myspace.com domain.

Ehh..

A few things.

1. How does this person know it's the owner of profilepeep? I've used it for 6 months with no problems whatsoever. There is also no way to know that the "owner" of profilepeep is hitting your page for 2 reasons. First... there is a way to make yourself "invisible" to profilepeep users. Second, you'd think the "owner of profilepeep would utilize this function. And even if I was wrong (which I'm not), how does she know who the "owner of profilepeep" is??!!

1.5. If you're stupid enough to try actually INSTALLING anything on your computer that you aren't sure is safe, that's why your account has been compromised... profilepeep isn't an install program like most scam trackers.

2. Profilepeep isn't something you install. It, like every other tracker, is a piece of code that you paste into your profile... JUST LIKE THE CODE YOU PASTE WHEN YOU USE A SITE TO "PIMP YOUR PROFILE"... The code is not capable of tracking your password because of the nature of the way password boxes are coded (if this is over your head, just take my word... I can't really dumb it down any more than that). All profilepeep is capable of is tracking is what IP address hits what myspace page and when. you'd actually have to install a program (probably a keystroke tracking program) to have somebody steal your password.

3. The most common way to have your account access compromised is this. You click one of those "SEE WHO IS VIEWING YOUR MYSPACE... THIS REALLY WORKS"... it looks like you have to log into myspace, but the link at the top of the page says something other than "login.myspace.com"... you don't pay attention, you type your password, and click submit. They now have your username and password and can do whatever they want.

Also... if a link says, "CLICK HERE FOR A FREE TRACKER", it's just going to post a bulletin to all your friends saying the same thing, and you're going to look like an idiot.

If you think I'm full of shit, make up a bogus email, a bogus myspace account, throw some pictures on there, and sign up for profilepeep with that information. See what happens.

I've been using it for 6 months and I've never had anything show up on myspace that I didn't do myself. Having said that, I also use a Mac, which is more or less invincible to all the crap PC users have to put up with.

Anyway, I'm not saying you're wrong... actually I am... I'm very certain that it's something else you're doing that's compromising your account... not profilepeep. I'm trying to say this nicely, but honestly... it's not profilepeep. The code you paste into your profile is not capable of doing what you're saying. I know this because basic computer science knowledge dictates that what you're saying is impossible. To somebody who understands coding, you may as well claim that your password was stolen "magically", you'll sound just as stupid.

Having said that...

Profilepeep knows what email and password you gave Profilepeep when you signed up...

if you were stupid enough to give them your main email address and your password that you use for everything from your ATM to your Myspace account, that's your own fault.

Can't wait to hear the response to this...

Okay, I totally agree with you anonymous no. 2, on all your points, Anybody stupid enough not to pay attention to where they're logging in, what email/password they use, and what they're installing... deserves what they get.

yeah whatever moron anon #2. i dont use the same password for any of my accounts. i am pretty sure it was profilepeep because it happened to more people than me. maybe you should not try to hide beyond an anon profile and just say you are the owner of profilepeep. idk where you got anythign about anyone installing anything on their computer, freakign moron. whospy was from profilepeep because their site had the profilepeep affilition on it. i wish the person who writes this blog wouldve included more of the detailed info i gave her.

i never even said anyone stole my password either, moron. pretty sure that it's the same way i and several people got subscribed to anon profile blogs with strange tracker codes in the source code.

seriously S, think. Do you really believe that the owner of profile peep is going to go on to every single blog, and shoot down criticism? You called anon a moron, yet you fail to counter any of his arguments. ad hominem is an invalid argument. you are attacking the arguer, not the argument.
